in Wales - About
the Area
The nearest town to Plough Cottage is Machynlleth, which
was once the ancient capital of Wales under Owain Glyndwr. Machynlleth
still has buildings that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries,
including the "Parliament House" which now exhibits a collection of
photographs, notes, models, books and slides depicting Welsh history in
the Middle Ages. Owain Glyndwr was one of the best known and
enigmatic figures from this period. He was revered as the
last
native Prince of Wales and inspired a national uprising which revived
hopes of an independent Wales. His story is depicted in the
Collection housed in the "Parliament House".
Present-day Machynlleth provides all the modern facilities
you
would expect, including supermarkets, a sports centre, swimming pool,
interesting and varied shops, pubs and restaurants. The town
also
hosts a colourful street market every Wednesday when the Main Street is
lined on both sides with a variety of stalls. Edward the 1st
granted a Royal Charter for the Market to be held in Machynlleth in
perpetuity.
The imposing clock tower in the centre was originally a Birthday gift
from the townspeople to mark the coming of age of Viscount Castlereagh,
the eldest son of the 5th Marquis of Londonderry, whose family lived at
Plas Machynlleth for many years.
